Malo Goes Low at Big Chief Beef Jerky Alberta Championship
OKOTOKS, AB (July 30, 2008) – Calgary’s Scott Malo turned in a tournament low round of 67 (-4) on Tuesday in leading wire to wire to capture the Big Chief Beef Jerky Alberta Championship at River's Edge Golf Club in Okotoks.
Malo, 16, recorded seven birdies during his final round after opening with a 75 (+4) on Monday for his first win of 2008 in the Boys 14 – 16 Division on the CJGA Junior Tour after two top-five finishes. “I hit my approach shots and putted really well this week,” said Malo. “I loved the course. The front nine was fun and the back was wide open.” Tanner Hicks of Calgary recovered from an 11 on the par-5 3rd hole to post an impressive 32 (-3) on the back nine and grab second spot while Travis Miller of Calgary finished third at 155 (+13).
Making his fourth CJGA start of the season, Calgary’s Steven Scheidt held off a hard charging Mitch Bach of Sundre, Alta. in the Boys 17 – 19 Division for his first career win. He posted rounds of 74 and 76 for a 150 total and a narrow one shot win. “I played pretty well overall,” admitted Scheidt. “I hit two bad tee shots but other than that it was good all around.” Nathan Shelemey of St. Albert, Alta. finished third in the flight at 154 (+12).
In other divisional races, Calgary products Chelcia Petersen and Rosie Jeon battled back and forth before Petersen emerged the victor. She posted rounds of 84 and 76 for a 160 total (+18) and a one shot win. “I putted well and hit some solid recovery shots,” said Petersen, who was making her first start of the year.
In the Boys 13 & Under Division, Richmond, B.C. resident Donald Qiu earned his first win of the year by seven shots ahead of Liam Fitzgerald of Calgary. He posted rounds of 81 and 83.
