MacDonald Crowned Low Overall at Big Chief Beef Jerky Alberta Championship

Markham, Ont. (August 22, 2007)- The Canadian Junior Golf Association held its seventh of eight Alberta tournaments this week at Elbow Spring Golf Club in Calgary, Alta., with the annual Big Chief Beef Jerky Alberta Championship.  Many of Alberta’s top junior golfers competed includingthe low overall winner Gerry MacDonald, 18, of Chestemere, Alta., who recorded a two-day total of 141 highlighted by a final round 68 (-4).

MacDonald posted rounds of 73 and 68 (-3) in running away with the Boys 17-19 Division title and his first CJGA win of the season.  “My strength was definitely my putting,” said MacDonald.  “I really like the greens on this course.”  Kenny Gregor, 17, of Calgary, Alta., placed second carding a two-day total of 145 (+1), while Craig Klassen, 17, also of Calgary, finished third at 146 (+2).

It was a tough race in the Boys 14-16 Division but Calgary, Alta. resident Craig Bloom, 16, managed to come out on top after recording consistent rounds of 73 (+2).  “I feel that I performed pretty well,” said Bloom.  “The course was in good shape and I really liked it.”  Falling only one stroke behind to tie for second was Jamie Cartwright, 15, of Canmore, Alta., and CJGA Team Canada member Scott Malo, 15, of Calgary.

Winning his first CJGA event of the season in the Boys 13 & Under Division was Derek Rucki, 13, of Chestemere, Alta., posting rounds of 78 and 79 for a two-day total of 157.  “I did what I had to to win,” said Rucki.  “The course was beautiful.”  Aaron Crawford, 13, of Calgary, Alta., grabbed second while Troy Stewart, 13, of Calgary, placed third.

A playoff crowned Kelly Amundrud, 16, of Calgary, Alta., the winner in the Girls Division.  After posting a first round of 69 (-3), Amundrud managed to hang on for the win.  “I played well the first day as I had my best round ever, but the second day things didn’t go quite as well,” admitted Amundrud.  “I ended up in the playoff and was able to birdie number 11 to take the win.”  Also finishing at a two-day total of 149 (+5) to place second was Jennifer MacKinnon, 16, of Calgary.  Tied for third was Jennifer Ha, 13, of Calgary, and Jocelyn Alford, 17, of Calgary.

The Alberta schedule will conclude September 15th and 16th, with the Alberta Fall Series at Picture Butte Golf Club in Picture Butte, Alta.
