September 1st, 2004

MELFORT, SK-
The Canadian Junior Golf Association concluded the 2004 portion of its Saskatchewan schedule last week with the Saskatchewan PGA Junior Championship, hosted by Melfort Golf and Country Club, in Melfort, Sask. The event was shortened from three rounds to two due to inclement weather that forced the cancellation of the opening round.

In the Boys 14-16 Division, the top honour went to 16-year-old Edmonton, Alta. Gary Helgason, who put together rounds of 74 and 75 for a two round total of 149. He took the division title by six strokes, as two juniors finished in a tie for second. 15-year-old Prince Albert, Sask. product Ryan Genest and 16-year-old Meadow Lake, Sask. resident Chris Tupper both finished the event with 36-hole totals of 155. Genest got the nod for second place by virtue of a tie-breaker.

It took an exciting three-way playoff to determine the winner in the Boys 17-19 Division but Matthew Komada, 18, of Saskatoon, Sask. was eventually crowned the winner, edging out Eric McCalmon, 17, of Prince Albert, Sask. and Scott Kulczycki, 17, of Meadow Lake, Sask.

In the Boys 13 & Under Division, 12-year-old native of Saskatoon, Sask. Jock Kriegler captured his first victory of the season, finishing the event with a two-day total of 165. Second place in the division went to 12-year-old product of Earl Grey, Sask. Jordan Hegglin, who finished two strokes off the pace. Rounding out the top three in the division was 12-year-old Travis Jenkins, who hails from Prince Albert, Sask. He finished the tournament four strokes behind the leader.

In addition to the Saskatchewan PGA, the Manitoba PGA, Ottawa PGA, Ontario PGA, and Northern Ontario PGA have also developed the CJGA/CPGA fund. One boy and one girl in each CPGA zone will be awarded their first year CPGA enrollment fees based on athletic, academic, and community achievements.
