July 19th, 2004
SUDBURY, ON- Ideal conditions greeted competitors for the final round of the CJGA Northern Ontario PGA Junior Championship hosted by Timber Wolf Golf & Country Club in Sudbury, Ont. on Sunday. With tight races expected in every division, the juniors did not disappoint as winners were crowned, including low overall champion Cory Bartlett of Shanty Bay, Ont.
Fresh off his recent victory as a member of CJGA Team Canada at the Mizuno North America Cup in South Carolina, the 15 year-old captured his first overall title as well as the Boys 14-16 Division after turning in an impressive second day card of 71. His 147 total earned him the division by two strokes ahead of Roddy McLeod, 16, of Hanmer, Ont. "I came in pretty confident," said the modest Bartlett. "I made quite a few putts on the back nine to hold on." Third place in the division went to Joseph Donnelly, 16, of Keswick, Ont. at 156.
The Boys 17-19 Division was captured by local golfer Stefan Staneckyj, 19, of Garson, Ont. Staneckyj followed his impressive open round 71 with an 82 to hold on to the division by two strokes ahead of Mark Bania, 17, of Kitchener, Ont. and Matthew Sim, 17, of Oakville, Ont. "I had been playing well coming into this event and expected to be in the top three," said Staneckyj. "My short game was pretty solid this week."
Another local golfer captured the Boys 13 & Under Division as Michael Grier 13, of Sudbury, Ont. was victorious in a tight race with Dexton Abresch, 13, of Hanmer, Ont. Grier pulled out the victory by two strokes. "I was able to keep my ball in the fairway off the tee with my driver," said Grier, of his first CJGA victory. Third place in the division went to Ben Merwin, 13, of Sudbury, Ont.
The youngest competitor in the Girls Division proved that age is not a factor as she defeated her nearest competitor by two strokes. Jacqueline Stol, 13, of Ottawa, Ont. captured her second consecutive event after winning the CJGA Cedarhurst Junior Open last week. Second place in the division went to Natalie Desjardins, 17, of Haileybury, Ont. In third was Vanessa Stol, 15, of Ottawa, Ont.
