Ng, Lee, Bockstael and Hebert Crowned Mizuno CJGA National Champions
INNISFIL, ON (August 21, 2008) – The Mizuno CJGA National Golf Championship presented by HSBC concluded today at National Pines Golf Club. Toronto’s Brandon Ng held on for the win in the Boys 14 – 16 Division, taking advantage of a tough final two holes by Cambridge resident Brent McKenzie.
Ng, 15, posted a very impressive four-day total of 295 (+7) on a challenging National Pines layout to lead wire to wire in the flight though it was no easy task as he trailed McKenzie by two heading into 16. An unfortunate double bogey, bogey finish dropped McKenzie to second. Richard Jung, 15, of Toronto, Ont. grabbed third spot in the flight. “Brent played really well today. I knew it was going to be close,” admitted Ng, a former CJGA Team Canada member. “It feels really good to have won.”
Trailing by two strokes heading to the back nine, Ottawa’s Chris Bockstael put on a clinic on the back in shooting 34 (-2) for a round of 73 (+1) and a five shot win over third round leader Daley Byles of Barrie, Ont. “I’m very happy,” said a beaming Bockstael after the round. “My game is gradually getting better each year and it feels good to get the win in my first four round tournament.” Chad Nicholson of Port Carling, Ont. finished in third spot.
In the Girls Division, Michelle Lee of Mississauga, Ont. was pushed to the limit by a very game Brogan McKinnon but managed to hang on to her lead and earn the title of national champion after posting a final round 72 (E) for a 296 total (+8). “Brogan was playing really well today,” admitted Lee, as McKinnon fired a career low 70 (-2) today to lose by only four strokes. “I kept thinking positive and told myself to stay consistent. The course was tricky and I came into this tournament feeling exhausted so I’m very happy to win.” Brianna Cooper carded a final round 76 (+4) to move up to third spot.
Samuel Hebert, 13, led wire to wire in the Boys 13 & Under Division to cap off a very impressive year in which he collected four CJGA division titles. The St. Thomas, Ont. resident turned in a round of 79 (+7) today for a 306 (+18) total to win by three shots over Ottawa’s Michael Reaume. “I lost my focus a bit on the back nine today but I hit 11 or 12 of 14 fairways today so I’m happy,” said the CJGA Team Canada member. “Its been a good year.” Another CJGA Team Canada member, Tae Won Kim of Richmond Hill, Ont. moved up to third in the division.
