Playoff Decides Boys 14-16 Division in Nike Golf Junior Series at Quarry Oaks

Steinbach, Man. – Clear, sunny skies greeted the juniors for the second round of the Nike Golf Junior Series at The Links at Quarry Oaks on Sunday. With better weather came better scores on a day where the Boys 14-16 Division was decided by a playoff.

First round leader Kevin Giesbrecht, 16, of Carman, Man. managed to hold onto his lead on Sunday, despite a late charge by Riley Unger, 16, of Plum Coulee, Man. Giesbrecht shot a 77 during the final round for a two-day total of 156. Unger, who was two strokes back after the first round, fired a 75 on Sunday to force a playoff. On the first hole, Unger flew the green, leaving the hole wide open for Giesbrecht, who shot par for the win. “It was my first playoff, but I was calm the whole time,” said Giesbrecht. “I played better yesterday but I hung in there the whole time.” Finishing tied for third, with a 157 two-day total of 157 were 15-year old Austin Steinberger, of East Selkirk, Man. and Winnipeg resident, Burke Wiebe, 15.

Ian Ford, 19, of Sioux Lookout, Ont. shot the best round of the day, a 74, to overtake first round leader Spencer Harris, 17, of Winnipeg, Man. and claim the Boys 17-19 Division. “I had everything firing today,” said Ford. “I hit a lot of greens and fairways, my putter was rolling fairly well and I stayed out of trouble.” Making a late charge on Sunday was defending champion Eric Johnson, 19, of Winnipeg, who overcame a difficult Saturday where he shot an uncharacteristic 87, and rebounded with an impressive 74 on Sunday to finish in second. One shot behind Johnson in third was Winnipeg native Ryan Cook, 17.

13-year-old Scott Mazur, of Winnipeg, finished off Sunday very strong, earning a win in the Boys 13 & Under Division, after shooting a 79 on the final day. “I was a little bit nervous on the first hole,” said the first round leader, “but I calmed down after that.” Mazur, who finished with 168 during the tournament, defeated the second place finisher, Bloomington, Minn. native Eliel Yorobe, 13, by an incredible 19 strokes. Joel Miyazawa struggled during the final round, but managed to hang onto third.

Eleanor Yorobe, 16, of Bloomington, Minn. recorded her first CJGA win of the season after shooting a 194 over the two-day tournament in Steinbach, Man. “It was fun out there. I played much better today, and my putter was a lot better also,” said Yorobe.
