SURREY, B.C.- The final round of the Canadian Junior Golf Association's Nike Golf Junior Series at Northview was completed today at Northview Golf & Country Club in Surrey, B.C. as competitors overcame a third day of persistent winds that plagued them over the three rounds of competitions. The low overall score for the event was turned in by Cory Renfrew of Victoria, B.C. in the Boys 17-19 Division.
Renfrew, 18, closed with a solid round of 71 to capture the division by five strokes ahead of Lucas Bogdan, 17, of Abbotsford, B.C. "I played a solid round of golf today," said Renfrew, who recorded a hole in one on the first day of the event. "I'm pretty happy with the way I putted the ball today." Third place in the division went to David Downs, 18, of Richmond, B.C. Downs closed with a 72 for a 227 total.
Darren Wallace, 16, of Langley, B.C. battled Joon Lee, 15, of Surrey, B.C. up until the final hole on Wednesday, eventually capturing the Boys 14-16 Division title by two strokes with a final round 76. Lee closed with a 73. "It was a bit of a struggle today but overall I'm happy with how I played overall considering the difficult wind conditions," said Wallace. "It was definitely a tight race heading into the last couple of holes." Third place in the division went to Jonnie Motomochi, 14, of White Rock, B.C. at 227. Motomochi closed with a 73 to move up from fourth.
Brian Cho, 13, of Coquitlam, B.C. led from start to finish in the Boys 13 & Under Division, closing with a 76 to earn the victory by five strokes ahead of Brock Staller, 12, of Surrey, B.C. "I hit my driver really well this week," said Cho. "The course played a bit easier than yesterday but the pins were pretty tough today." Adam Svensson, 11, of Surrey, B.C. finished with an 82 on Wednesday to hold on to third place in the division at 245.
Caroline Kim, 17, of Port Coquitlam, B.C. withstood a late charge from Thornhill, Ontario's Anita Gahir, 17, to hold on for victory in the Girls Division. Kim closed with a 75 for a 226 finish. Gahir cut the lead to four strokes, posting a 74. "I putted much better than yesterday," said Kim. "It was fun playing with Anita and Julie (Kim) today." Julie Kim grabbed third spot in the division at 241.
Division winners at Northview will earn an exemption into the Nike Golf Junior Championship, the only invitational conducted by the CJGA, scheduled to be held in Thornhill, Ont. from August 23 25 at Bayview Golf & Country Club. Top finishers will also have the opportunity to qualify for the Stephen Ames Cup, a Ryder Cup style event pitting CJGA Team Canada against Trinidad & Tobago. The Stephen Ames Cup will be held at a private golf club in Toronto, Ont. from July 28 - 30.
