Henderson Cards 71 to capture division at CJGA Nike Golf Junior Championship

THORNHILL, ON- Tight races in several age divisions highlighted the final round of the CJGA Nike Golf Junior Championship on Wednesday at Bayview Country Club in Thornhill, Ont. Toronto’s Patrick Forbes held off a hard charging Ju Young Park to capture the Boys 17 – 19 Division and Smiths Falls, Ont. resident Brittany Henderson fired a tournament low 71 for her second national championship victory in as many weeks.

Forbes, who plays out of Bayview, took full advantage of his home course knowledge, carding a 72 for a one stroke victory over Park. “It feels great to know that I can beat these guys,” said Forbes. It was a long, stressful day and I’m pretty relieved to get the win.” In third place was Trevor Edwards, 18, of Calgary, Alta.

It was a back and forth final round in the Girls division as Brittany Henderson outdueled second round leader Juanita Rico, firing an incredible 71 for a 228 total. “I just wanted to play well so Juanita had to play her best to beat me,” said Henderson, 14. “It feels great to win.” Rico carded a round of 75 for a 230 total. Kristina Gargaro, of Port Moody, B.C. finished third at 246.

Justin Shin, 13, of Richmond Hill, Ont. punctuated his stellar 2005 season with a wire to wire victory in the Boys 13 & Under division at Bayview. Shin carded a 76 on Wednesday for a 229 total and a ten stroke victory over Patrick Cansfield, 13, of Port Huron, MI. “I changed my swing slightly with my driver and it’s been giving me more distance, said Shin, who routinely out drove his competitors by 50 yards. Luke Shaughnessy, 13, of Peterborough, Ont. moved up to third place after firing a division low 75.

Ryan Putnam, 16, of Georgetown, Ont. led wire to wire in the Boys 14 – 16 Division, closing with a 76 for a 225 total and a comfortable five stroke cushion over Michael Gligic, 15, of Burlington, Ont. “Just tried to make pars today and keep it simple,” said Putnam. “It’s definitely the biggest win of my career.” Third place in the division went to Michael Young, 16, of Oakville, Ont.
