Cards 71 to capture division at CJGA Nike Golf Junior
Championship
THORNHILL, ON- Tight races in several age divisions
highlighted the final round of the CJGA Nike Golf Junior
Championship on Wednesday at Bayview Country Club in
Thornhill, Ont. Toronto’s Patrick Forbes held
off a hard charging Ju Young Park to capture the Boys
17 – 19 Division and Smiths Falls, Ont. resident
Brittany Henderson fired a tournament low 71 for her
second national championship victory in as many weeks.
Forbes, who plays out of Bayview, took full advantage
of his home course knowledge, carding a 72 for a one
stroke victory over Park. “It feels great to
know that I can beat these guys,” said Forbes.
It was a long, stressful day and I’m pretty
relieved to get the win.” In third place was
Trevor Edwards, 18, of Calgary, Alta.
It was a back and forth final round in the Girls
division as Brittany Henderson outdueled second round
leader Juanita Rico, firing an incredible 71 for a
228 total. “I just wanted to play well so Juanita
had to play her best to beat me,” said Henderson,
14. “It feels great to win.” Rico carded
a round of 75 for a 230 total. Kristina Gargaro, of
Port Moody, B.C. finished third at 246.
Justin Shin, 13, of Richmond Hill, Ont. punctuated
his stellar 2005 season with a wire to wire victory
in the Boys 13 & Under division at Bayview. Shin
carded a 76 on Wednesday for a 229 total and a ten
stroke victory over Patrick Cansfield, 13, of Port
Huron, MI. “I changed my swing slightly with
my driver and it’s been giving me more distance,
said Shin, who routinely out drove his competitors
by 50 yards. Luke Shaughnessy, 13, of Peterborough,
Ont. moved up to third place after firing a division
low 75.
Ryan Putnam, 16, of Georgetown, Ont. led wire to
wire in the Boys 14 – 16 Division, closing with
a 76 for a 225 total and a comfortable five stroke
cushion over Michael Gligic, 15, of Burlington, Ont.
“Just tried to make pars today and keep it simple,”
said Putnam. “It’s definitely the biggest
win of my career.” Third place in the division
went to Michael Young, 16, of Oakville, Ont.
About the Nike Golf Junior Championship
The Nike Golf Junior Championship is the final tournament
of a series of Nike events to take place over the
2005 season. This 54-hole stroke play event will take
place on August 22 – 24, 2005 at Bayview Country
Club in Thornhill, Ont. Juniors who wish to participate
in the Nike Golf Junior Championship must first qualify
through the various qualifying events put on by the
CJGA and Nike throughout the summer. There will be
4 spots available at each Nike Golf Junior Series
event (One spot in each age group). The junior who
wins his/her age group will advance to the Nike Golf
Junior Championship. Junior’s who place first
in the Nike Series events will receive an automatic
invitation to the championships. Each participant
will be given a pair of Nike golf shoes and 12 Nike
balls. The winner of each division will be rewarded
with a custom set of Nike Clubs.
