16th Seed Fallis Completes Improbable Victory at Ping Canadian Junior Match Play Championship

August 6th, 2005

PICKERING, ONT.- A wind swept Cherry Downs Golf Club in Pickering, Ont. was the host of the semi-final and final matches for the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Ping Canadian Junior Match Play Championship on Friday. An exciting semi-final round was surpassed by an even more entertaining final round that was undecided in each age division until the final few holes.

It was a Cinderella story in the Boys 14-16 Division as the 16th seed, Jay Fallis of Burlington, Ont. captured his first ever CJGA victory in style, defeating the red hot Ryan Sevigny, 16, of Stittsville, Ont. in the final by a score of 2 & 1. “I’m pretty surprised,” said Fallis, after the round. “The fact that I was able to beat the best players here for the win really raises my confidence level.” Fallis trailed two down to Sevigny on the front nine at one point before fighting back and ending the match on 17.

Trevor Edwards, 18, of Calgary, Alta. pulled out an upset victory in the Boys 17-19 Division, knocking off the defending champion and number one seed, Geoffrey McLeod, 19, of Toronto, Ont. in the final by a score of 3 & 1. Edwards never trailed after the third hole of the final match. “I’m more relieved than anything,” said an exhausted Edwards after the win.” “It’s good to have something to show for all the effort I put in the last four days.” Edwards also represented the CJGA and Canada recently at the inaugural Stephen Ames Cup.

A dominating performance was turned in by Justin Shin, 13, of Richmond Hill, Ont. in the Boys 13 & Under Division. The young phenom never even saw the 16th hole over his three matches, dispatching the second seed, Brock Staller, 13, of Surrey, B.C. in the final by a score of 5 & 3. "I have to thank my dad for the win,” said Shin, who took a few short game lessons from his father after the stroke play portion of the event. “I was very nervous every hole because I knew every mistake made a difference.”
