PICKERING, ON- The Ping Canadian Junior Match Play Championship concluded today at Cherry Downs Golf Club in Pickering, Ont. as semi-final and final matches were conducted in each age division. A dominating performance was turned in by Cory Bartlett, 15, of Shanty Bay, Ont. as he breezed through his semi-final and final matches by identical scores of 6 & 5.
Bartlett, the 13th seed, dispatched 16th seeded Benjamin Rudkins, 16, of Barrie, Ont. in the semis and Mississauga, Ont. native Greg Doherty, 16, in the finals. "Being in South Carolina last month helped me a lot mentally," said Bartlett, of his spot on CJGA Team Canada for the North America Cup. "I just kept plugging away."
The Girls Division title was captured by the youngest competitor in the field as Jennifer Kirby, 13, of Paris, Ont. defeated Helena Harbridge, 16, of Etobicoke, Ont. in the final match by a score of 4 & 3. The 3rd seeded Kirby defeated 2nd seeded Sonya Jang, 17, of North York, Ont. in their semi final match while Harbridge defeated Lauren Bowerman-Ritchie, 16, of Bowmanville, Ont. "I definitely played better in the match play portion," said Kirby. "I hit some good drives off the tee and kept the ball in play."
The Boys 17-19 Division title was earned by 2nd seeded Geoffrey McLeod, 18, of Etobicoke, Ont. McLeod dispatched 14th seeded Ryan Kennedy, 17, of Kingston, Ont. in the semis before defeating the 16th seed, Mark Bania, 17, of Kitchener, Ont. 2 & 1 in the final. "To win an event this unique and on a national scale is really something special," said McLeod. "I had a few second place finishes this year so it feels really good to get over the hump."
The Boys 13 & Under Division title was captured by Johnathan Kim-Moss, 13, of Brampton, Ont. Kim-Moss, the 1st seed, defeated the 7th seeded Adam Lewis, 13, of Whitby, Ont. in the close final by a score of 1 Up. "There was some great competition this week," said Kim-Moss. "The final match nearly went into extra holes but I was able to halve the final hole to get the win."
